Now that the most intense time for album releases is yet to come, what are your favorite releases so far? What surprised you positively/negatively? Here's mine: • Pyrrhon - What Passes For Survival • Venenum - Trance Of Death • Uneven Structure - La Partition • SikTh - The Future In Whose Eyes? • The Hirsch Effekt - Eskapist • Dodecahedron - Kwintessens • Sunless - Urraca • Replacire - Do Not Deviate • Pain Of Salvation - The Passing Light Of Day • Dead Cross - Dead Cross • Byzantine - The Cicada Tree • Onryo - Muto • Ulsect - Ulsect • Ingurgitating Oblivion - Vision Wallows In Symphonies Of Light • Gorod - Kiss The Freak • Suffocation.Of The Dark Light • Artificial Brain - Infrared Horizon • Virulent Depravity - Fruit Of The Poisoned Tree • Dawn Of Retaliation - Apex • Beyond Grace - Seekers I'm surprised by the massive amounts of GREAT Death Metal, mostly. So many worthwile albums! And a few still to come.

Also most of the albums at the top of my list are way better than expected. Never heard of Venenum before, but that album is a masterpiece. Just a little flat in the drum sound. That new Pyrrhon is gnarly as fuck! Uneven Structure and SikTh created two beautiful masterpieces, both unexpectedly having become my favorite work of theirs. And the new Hirsch Effekt album is also way better than expected. Really good stuff!

In an effort to help keep everybody up to date with all the yearly releases we have made a Wiki page. It lists all relevant Progressive Metal and Rock albums released this year.

The data is taken from this which is updated by myself. The wiki page does not include links to albums so that the page is less bulky and more manageable. I welcome everyone to tell me which albums are missing as I fully intend for this list to be comprehensive with regards to what this community is interested in. The Google spreadsheet allows for anyone to make comments, and there is also a link for recommendations/suggestions. You can also just send me a pm or respond here. My top 10 as it stands: Soen - Lykaia Ayreon - The Source Unleash The Archers - Apex Leprous - Malina Mastodon - Emperor Of Sand Need - Hegaiamas: A Song for Freedom Lor - In Forgotten Sleep Pain Of Salvation - In The Passing Light Of Day Uneven Structure - La Partition The Burden Remains - Touchstone I'm expecting things to change a bit in the top 10, especially with new Caligulas Horse and Toothgrinder albums coming out which sound promising. If someone told me 5 years ago that my favourite albums of the year would include a prog metal opera, wanky power metal and folk metal, I would have called them insane.

Right now, it's very close between The Hirsch Effekt's Eskapist and Persefone's Aathma. Caligula's Horse's In Contact could potentially join that team if it's as good as it sounds like it's going to be thus far. I think I like Holon: Agnosie a tiny bit better, but it's very close. THE certainly bucked the trend of 'previously heavy bands releasing an overly melodic album' this year.

I'm American and don't know a lick of German. For the most part, I actually quite like the way the vocals sound; when the band starts growling, the German almost sounds more menacing. The exact moment that sold me on the band was when I listened to 'Fixum' for the first time and Nils Wittrock dropped that first 'PREISS.' So much anger in the best way possible. It's interesting to compare it to other languages too. Another one of my favorite non-English tunes is 'Verne' by Novembre, in large part because of the lyrics in the second half of the track.

When I first plugged my new USB multi cr-vu29g driver reader, windows failed to properly install cr-v10-u29g driver. It is a pity, that now I can cr-v10-u29g express – it is very occupied. The Italian lyrics and the intonation really sell the morose vibe in the son's latter half in a way that English just doesn't. I definitely think THE's vocals have a lot of flair and personality to them. I can't understand a lick of what they're singing, but the way they're doing it makes me want to sing/shout along whenever possible. I agree that Eskapist is a little more melodic than Agnosie, but it often really suits the album imo. Songs like Lifnej, Xenophotopia and Inukshuk really benefit from the beautiful melodic parts. And songs like Tardigrada and Aldebaran are probably among their heaviest stuff ever. The only song that bugs me a little is Natans.

It's melodic intro is a few minutes too long, especially because both songs before have so much energy. It takes them around 5 minutes to get something going in the song. In my opinion it would have suited the structure better to get going 2-3 minutes earlier and then chill out again in the middle of the song:D Yeah, Fixum is a great song and that line with 'PREIS' is also really good:D In English he is singing something like 'Look around twice now, and don't forget anything if you leave. Everything has it's PRICE' Nils lyrics (and also Iljas to some degree) are really good! Very touching and meaningful. A little cryptic, but just so much that you still get what they wanna deliver • • • • •. I've heard some native German speakers say that their lyrics can come across as a bit whiny or overwrought at times, but honestly, the way it's sung is more than effective enough to make me look past it even if that is the case.
